To start an online business blog you should use the WordPress platform. WordPress is the best and easiest to use for blogging, especially for self-hosted blogs. Here is a few tips that will make your blog more visible on the web.

This is one of the reasons why WordPress is so effective at drawing traffic. Each time you add a new post it will automatically 'ping' (meaning 'notify') the URLs in your ping list that you have just entered new content. 

This alerts the search engine robots to come spider your site and will help your new content getting indexed in the search engines.

Adding a quality ping list can make a dramatic difference in regards to free, natural, ('organic') traffic from the search engines to your blog.

Below is a listing of URLs to add to your ping list. Copy the list and paste it into the appropriate box in the 'Writing' area of your blog. First, click on 'Settings', then Writing and scroll down to the ping box. By default, there is only one URL here ... pingomatic.com.

Justcopy the list below and paste the text into the box (there should be only one URL per line). After you have pasted the URLs, don't forget to click the 'Save Changes' button. Every URL in your list will automatically be 'pinged'  each time a new post is published.

Another tip: While WordPress is very search-engine friendly right out of the box there is one more thing you can do to give your blogs a little extra magic.

By customizing the Permalinks structure you will be able to attract more traffic! In the 'Settings' area click the 'Permalinks' link. Tick the 'Custom Structure' radio button and enter /%postname%/ (with the slashes) in the box. The reason for doing this is it makes your blog posts much more search engine friendly than the default option.

Note: Some blogs/servers require that you put /index.php first in the box 

Important: It is important that you change your Permalink structure soon after installing your WordPress blog. If you have an existing blog that has content indexed then I do not recommend changing the Permalink structure! Doing so will change all of the URLs for your post pages and your indexed content will now have broken URLs.
