Finding the Right Keywords

In order to attract visitors to your website, finding the right keywords is extremely important. When people search for something on Google, they type in one or more words - a search query. If you have exactly those words on a web page, Google might send the searcher to that specific page.

Search queries on search engines actually are keywords, and you must have such queries (= keywords) on your pages to get organic traffic to your website from the search engines.

So, building an online business should start with keyword research. Before deciding your business niche or concept, you need to do thorough research to find a niche that can be profitable without having too much competition.

When doing this research you must see to that there is sufficient demand for the product or service you intend to promote (lots of people wanting it), and that not too many websites are promoting the same products.

Finding the right keywords isn't always easy, however there are keyword research tools to help you with this task. You will find both free and paid tools to do the research.

Free Keyword Tools

The best free keyword tool is Google's Keyword Research Tool. It gives you 100 keywords for any word or phrase you search for, and also an indication of the demand and competition for those keywords.

However, you get many more keywords and more information on those keywords if you use their keyword tool inside your Google account. If you don't have one you should get one, because there is so much useful information for an online business starter. And a Google account is free.

GoodKeywords is a free keyword research and management software. Features include importing of CSV data from Google Keyword Tool, simple web page analysis, long-tail keyword list multiplication and manipulation, and more.

While the Google Keyword Tool is online, GoodKeywords is a piece of software that you install on your computer. It utilizes keywords from Google, but does a lot more things with the data than Google "himself".

Paid Keyword Tools

The online business service Site Build It! has a very good keyword researcher (they call it brainstormer) included in their service. Site Build It! is so much more than a keyword tool, though; it provides you with just about everything you need to get your online business started.  Read this SiteBuildIt! review.

SiteBuildIt! uses Wordtracker (see below) as source for their keyword research tool. It gives you instantly demand (number of searches) and competition for any keyword, along with lots of other information. So this one is very useful and highly recommended!

One of the best keyword tools is Wordtracker, which makes finding the right keywords quite easy. It costs $69 per month though, alternatively $379 per year, so it might not be for starters. You can have a 7 day free trial to see if it's right for you, and you can also do some limited keyword research without paying anything.

For more information, read this Wordtracker review.

Another good keyword research tool is Keyword Elite. While the two above mentioned are online services, this one is software to be installed on your computer. It costs (at the time of writing) $97 (one time payment).

Keyword Elite uses a database of keywords developed for the software itself. However, you also have the choice of including results from Ask.com, website meta tags (keywords on other websites), and the Google Suggestion Tool. Keyword Elite has a number of useful features.

Please understand that finding the right keywords is critical to the success of your online home business, so give that important task plenty of time and effort! Likewise, you need to know how to implement the keywords on your web pages.
