Step One
The first step to setting up a website is deciding exactly what you
want your website to be about. This may seem like an easy
step, but you need to think about it. Are you going to set up a
family website, an e-commerce site, informational site, or some
other kind of website? It is highly adviceable that you make paper
sketches of the site before starting to build it on the computer.
Be sure to organize the site well; think of your Home Page
like the Table of Contents page in a book. Make it easy for the
visitors to find what they are looking for. The design and layout of
your site's pages are very important. Try to keep a consistent
look throughout the site and put some serious thoughts into what
fonts you are going to use, background colour or image etc.
Now the time has come to think of a name for your web site.
If you're about to start a business online you probably would like
to have the business name as the name of your web site. However,
when deciding the name of your site, it's crucial that it is also
available as domain name (as you would like to have your site
name like the domain name). You can check if your planned name is
available as domain name at
www.namecheap.com.
One of the most annoying things for people surfing the web are pages
that take a long time to download. All those fancy graphics and
flashing colours will not do you any good if instead of waiting for
the page to download the viewer closes his browser and goes
elsewhere. So consider going light on the pictures and other
graphics and heavy on the information content.
As mentioned before you should construct your web site on paper
before starting to build it on the site builder. Decide the numbers
of pages you want to have inside of your site, and determine
logical titles for them. Figure out what you will have on every
page (header, footer, logo, navigation bar or links etc.) so you can
make one page ready (template) and then copy that one for the other
pages.
Your website should also be easy to navigate, all your links
should be obvious to the viewer, and should be self explanatory or
have information about where the link will take them. Always link
back to your homepage in order to make navigating your web page
easier for your potential customers.
The most important part of your web site pages is undoubtedly the
content. The visitor must feel that the content is informative
and of high value to him, if not he will go elsewhere. Write out any
information content you will be putting onto your web page in
Microsoft Word (or other word processor) first so you can detect any
errors you might have made. You can cut and paste parts into your
site builder later.
Now you are ready to start constructing your web site.
